This seminar will bring together researchers, experts, and interested stakeholders to explore the challenges and opportunities in navigating critical mineral sustainability, security, and competitiveness. As demand for critical minerals (CRMs) grows due to the global energy transition, sustainability impacts, geopolitical tensions, supply chain dependencies, and governance gaps present increasing risks and uncertainties. During this seminar we will discuss two recent research outputs from the Mistra Geopolitics Program that discuss these issues and that feed into the work of the Mistra Mineral Governance Programme:

  • Corporate perspectives on balancing sustainability, competitiveness, and geopolitics in CRM supply chains (Aaron Maltais, SEI, with discussant Daria Ivleva, Adelphi)

  • The role of great power competition in shaping CRM governance (Jiayi Zhou, SIPRI, with discussant Gunilla Reischl, UI)

Based on insights and discussions from the research presentations we will conclude with a roundtable discussion on key governance gaps and pathways for achieving secure and sustainable CRM supplies.
